About this tool

This transcribes the speech in a video into plain text. Upload an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file — there is no need to extract the audio first — and you get back a transcript you can read, search, quote and paste. It runs an open speech-recognition model on our servers, so it works the same on a phone as on a computer.

How to transcribe a video to text

  1. 1.Choose the video file.
  2. 2.Pick the spoken language, or leave it on auto-detect.
  3. 3.Press Run and leave the tab open while it transcribes.
  4. 4.Download the transcript as a .txt file.

When people use it

Recorded meetings and webinars

Turn a screen recording of a call into text you can skim, search and quote from.

Video into writing

Use the transcript as the first draft of show notes, a blog post or a newsletter.

Lectures and training videos

Get notes you can search, rather than scrubbing through the video for one explanation.

What it will not do

Worth knowing before you upload, rather than after.

  • Free transcription covers up to 10 minutes of recording and 100MB. Trim a longer video first.
  • Speakers are not labelled — you get continuous text.
  • Accuracy drops with background music, crosstalk, heavy accents and poor microphones. Check names and numbers before you publish.
  • It transcribes what was said in the language spoken; it does not translate.

Questions

How do I transcribe a video to text?

Choose the video above, leave the language on auto-detect or pick one, and press Run. Download the .txt transcript when it finishes.

Do I need to convert the video to audio first?

No. Upload the video directly — the audio is extracted automatically.

Can I get subtitles with timestamps instead?

Yes. Use the SRT or VTT subtitle tools. They use the same engine, but the output has timings so you can load it as captions.

Can I transcribe a YouTube video?

Not from a link. You can transcribe a video file you have on your device.

Is it free?

Yes — free, no account and no watermark, for videos up to 10 minutes and 100MB.

What happens to my file?

Your upload goes to private storage that is never public and never listed, and only the anonymous session that created the job can read it. The original file is deleted as soon as processing succeeds. The result stays available for about 90 minutes, and you can delete everything immediately with the Delete now button.
