About this tool

This converts video files to MP4 — H.264 video with AAC audio, the combination that plays on essentially every phone, browser, TV and editing app. Upload a MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI or other video and you get back an MP4 that opens where the original would not. MKV, AVI and WebM are common and still awkward on phones, TVs and older software. MP4 usually just works.

Upload forms that reject your file

Plenty of sites accept MP4 and little else. Converting first saves a failed upload.

iPhone video on Windows

iPhones save MOV files with HEVC video, which some Windows PCs cannot play without an extra codec. An H.264 MP4 plays everywhere.

What it will not do

Worth knowing before you upload, rather than after.

  • This converter always outputs MP4. For another format, use the MP4 to MOV, MP4 to WebM, Video to GIF or Video to MP3 tools.
  • The video is re-encoded rather than repackaged, so it takes a little time and costs a little quality.
  • Copy-protected video, such as streaming downloads and commercial DVDs, cannot be converted.
  • Free files are limited to 100MB and 20 minutes.

Can I convert to MOV, WebM or GIF instead?

Yes, each has its own tool: MP4 to MOV, MP4 to WebM and Video to GIF. To keep only the sound, use Video to MP3.

Will converting reduce quality?

A little, because the video is re-encoded. At the settings used here the difference is hard to see in normal viewing.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The conversion runs on our servers, so it works the same in any modern browser, on a phone or a computer.

What happens to my file?

Your upload goes to private storage that is never public and never listed, and only the anonymous session that created the job can read it. The original file is deleted as soon as processing succeeds. The result stays available for about 90 minutes, and you can delete everything immediately with the Delete now button.
