About this tool

This converts an MKV (Matroska) video into an MP4. MKV is popular for screen and game recordings — OBS has long suggested it, because a crash does not ruin the file — but phones, TVs, editors and social platforms often refuse it. The MP4 you get back uses H.264 video and AAC audio, which they all accept.

How to convert MKV to MP4

  1. 1.Choose the MKV file.
  2. 2.Press Run and leave the tab open while it converts.
  3. 3.Download the MP4.

When people use it

OBS recordings

Turn an MKV recording into an MP4 you can upload, or drop into an editor that does not accept MKV.

Playing on a phone or TV

Many phones, TVs and consoles will not open MKV files. MP4 is the safe choice.

Social and chat uploads

Platforms and messaging apps that reject MKV accept MP4.

What it will not do

Worth knowing before you upload, rather than after.

  • The video is re-encoded rather than remuxed, so it takes a little time and costs a little quality.
  • Only one audio track is kept, and some embedded subtitle tracks are dropped. Multi-language files come out in one language.
  • Free files are limited to 100MB and 20 minutes.

Questions

How do I convert MKV to MP4?

Choose the MKV file above and press Run. Download the MP4 when the job finishes.

What is an MKV file?

A Matroska video container. It can hold several video, audio and subtitle tracks in one file, which makes it flexible but less widely supported than MP4.

Is this a remux or a re-encode?

A re-encode to H.264 and AAC. A remux is faster and lossless, but it fails when the MKV holds codecs that MP4 players cannot handle. Re-encoding always gives a file that plays.

Can I do this in OBS instead?

Yes, if OBS made the file: File → Remux Recordings turns an MKV into an MP4 without re-encoding. That is quicker than an upload when you already have OBS open.

Is it free?

Yes — free, no account, no watermark, for files up to 100MB and 20 minutes long.

What happens to my file?

Your upload goes to private storage that is never public and never listed, and only the anonymous session that created the job can read it. The original file is deleted as soon as processing succeeds. The result stays available for about 90 minutes, and you can delete everything immediately with the Delete now button.
