About this tool

This makes a video file smaller — MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV — by re-encoding it to H.264 at a quality level you choose. It is the right tool when a file is too big to email, too big to upload, or eating storage you would rather not pay for — and you would rather lose a little visual quality than cut the video itself.

How to compress video

  1. 1.Choose the video you want to shrink.
  2. 2.Set the quality value — lower numbers mean better quality and a bigger file.
  3. 3.Press Run and wait for the job to finish.
  4. 4.Download the compressed MP4.

When people use it

Email and chat limits

Get under the attachment ceiling without cutting content or splitting the file into parts.

Uploading on slow connections

A smaller file is the difference between an upload that finishes and one that times out.

Screen recordings

Recordings of mostly-static screens compress dramatically, often for no visible loss at all.

What it will not do

Worth knowing before you upload, rather than after.

  • A file that is already compressed may not get much smaller, and can occasionally get larger. You will see the real output size rather than a promise.
  • Compression is lossy: detail is discarded to save space, and it cannot be recovered afterwards.
  • Output is always H.264 MP4, which is the widest-compatibility choice rather than the smallest possible one.

Questions

How much smaller will my video get?

It depends entirely on the source. Screen recordings and high-bitrate camera footage often shrink a lot; a file that has already been compressed hard may barely move. We show you the actual resulting size rather than claiming a percentage.

Will it lose quality?

Yes, some — that is how compression works. The quality setting controls the trade-off: lower numbers keep more detail and save less space.

What quality setting should I use?

The default is a reasonable middle. Drop it if you can see artefacts you dislike; raise it if the file is still too big and the content is forgiving, such as a screen recording.

Is it free and is there a watermark?

Free, no account, and nothing is stamped on your video.

What formats can I compress?

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV inputs, always producing an MP4 output.

Can I compress an MP4 without changing the format?

Yes. An MP4 goes in and a smaller MP4 comes out, re-encoded at the quality you set.

What happens to my file?

Your upload goes to private storage that is never public and never listed, and only the anonymous session that created the job can read it. The original file is deleted as soon as processing succeeds. The result stays available for about 90 minutes, and you can delete everything immediately with the Delete now button.
