About this tool
This converts an AVI video into an MP4. AVI is an older Windows format, common from digital cameras, camcorders and DVD rips of the 2000s, often with codecs such as DivX, Xvid or Motion JPEG that current phones and browsers do not play. The MP4 you get back uses H.264 and AAC, so it plays on current devices and uploads without trouble.
How to convert AVI to MP4
- 1.Choose the AVI file.
- 2.Press Run and leave the tab open while it converts.
- 3.Download the MP4.
When people use it
Old camera and camcorder clips
Make family videos from an older digital camera play on a phone or a TV.
Archiving
Keep old footage in a format that current devices, and the next ones, will still open.
Sharing and uploading
Send old clips by message, or upload them to a platform that does not accept AVI.
What it will not do
Worth knowing before you upload, rather than after.
- Old AVI files are often low resolution. Converting makes them play; it does not add detail.
- A damaged or incomplete AVI may fail to convert.
- Free files are limited to 100MB and 20 minutes.
Questions
How do I convert AVI to MP4?
Choose the AVI file above and press Run. Download the MP4 when the job finishes.
Why won't my AVI file play?
AVI is only a container. Many AVI files use codecs such as DivX, Xvid or Motion JPEG that phones and browsers do not support. Converting to H.264 MP4 fixes that.
Will the MP4 look better?
No, and it will not look noticeably worse. Converting changes the format, not the detail in the picture.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no account, no watermark, for files up to 100MB and 20 minutes long.
What happens to my file?
Your upload goes to private storage that is never public and never listed, and only the anonymous session that created the job can read it. The original file is deleted as soon as processing succeeds. The result stays available for about 90 minutes, and you can delete everything immediately with the Delete now button.
