About this tool

This creates a timed WebVTT (.vtt) caption file from a video or audio recording. WebVTT is the caption format built into HTML5 video, so if you are putting a player on your own web page, this is the file the browser expects.

How to generate VTT subtitles

  1. 1.Choose the video or audio file you want captions for.
  2. 2.Pick the spoken language, or leave it on auto-detect.
  3. 3.Press Run and wait for the job to finish.
  4. 4.Download the .vtt file and reference it from your video element.

When people use it

HTML5 video on your own site

Reference the .vtt from a track element and the browser handles the caption UI for you, with no JavaScript library needed.

Web accessibility

Captions on self-hosted video are usually the first accessibility gap an audit finds, and the easiest to close.

Course and documentation video

Learners searching a page can find the moment they need when the words are in a caption file rather than locked in audio.

What it will not do

Worth knowing before you upload, rather than after.

  • Timings come from detected speech and may need small manual corrections.
  • No speaker labels or positioning cues are added.
  • Captions are in the spoken language; this does not translate.
  • Styling is left to your player's CSS rather than embedded in the file.

Questions

What is a VTT file?

WebVTT is the caption format for HTML5 video. It is a text file beginning with the line WEBVTT, followed by timed caption blocks. Browsers read it natively through a track element.

VTT or SRT?

VTT for video embedded in a web page; SRT for YouTube, desktop players and editing software. They carry the same information in slightly different syntax.

How do I add it to my video?

Put a track element inside your video element pointing at the .vtt file, with kind set to captions and the correct srclang. The browser does the rest.

Is it free?

Yes, free with no account and no watermark, for files up to 100MB.

What happens to my file?

Your upload goes to private storage that is never public and never listed, and only the anonymous session that created the job can read it. The original file is deleted as soon as processing succeeds. The result stays available for about 90 minutes, and you can delete everything immediately with the Delete now button.
