About this tool

This converts M4A audio into MP3. M4A is the audio format Apple uses — iPhone Voice Memos and iTunes Store purchases are .m4a files — and it is not always welcome elsewhere. MP3 plays on every player, car stereo, website and podcast tool.

How to convert M4A to MP3

  1. 1.Choose the M4A file.
  2. 2.Pick a bitrate — 128 kbps is plenty for voice memos, 192 kbps for music.
  3. 3.Press Run and wait for the job to finish.
  4. 4.Download the MP3.

When people use it

Voice memos

Send a recorded memo, lecture or meeting to someone on Windows or Android as a file that simply plays.

Older players and car stereos

Many MP3 players and car stereos read MP3 but not M4A.

Websites and upload forms

Some audio upload forms and site builders accept MP3 only.

What it will not do

Worth knowing before you upload, rather than after.

  • Both formats are lossy, so converting costs a little quality — rarely audible at 192 kbps or above.
  • Copy-protected files cannot be converted, including older iTunes .m4p files and Apple Music downloads.
  • Free files are limited to 100MB and 20 minutes.

Questions

How do I convert M4A to MP3?

Choose the M4A file above, pick a bitrate, and press Run. Download the MP3 when the job finishes.

What is an M4A file?

An audio file in an MPEG-4 container, usually encoded as AAC. It is Apple's default audio format and is used by Voice Memos and the iTunes Store.

Which bitrate should I use?

128 kbps is fine for speech such as voice memos. Use 192 kbps for music, or 256 kbps to keep more detail.

Can I convert Apple Music songs?

No. Apple Music downloads are copy-protected, and protected files cannot be converted.

Is it free?

Yes — free, no account, no watermark, for files up to 100MB and 20 minutes long.

What happens to my file?

Your upload goes to private storage that is never public and never listed, and only the anonymous session that created the job can read it. The original file is deleted as soon as processing succeeds. The result stays available for about 90 minutes, and you can delete everything immediately with the Delete now button.
